Letters to a Jobseeker Part 3 – Cover letter

Letters to a jobseeker - the cover letter

Welcome to part 3 in our short series of hints and suggestions when applying for positions advertised on the internet.

Dear Jobseeker

Yes, the cover letter is important! It is an executive summary of your CV; this is where you have to capture first the recruiter and then the prospective employer’s attention. Carefully read the application and highlight the relevant information for the specific position in your opening paragraph and expand this in the cover letter.

Once you have my attention, I will delve deeper into your CV but refer me to the relevant information! If you apply for a sales position and you had a month’s sales experience in 2002, it will probably not help much. However, if you were involved in selling and the designation or job title in the organisation was some unique or unfamiliar name, refer me to that in your cover letter.

Good luck with your job search!

The recruiter.
